I played the new AR-based Twister Air — and it’s awesome
As a child, I had no affinity for Twister, the iconic math game where you move your arms and legs across different colored dots while trying not to fall off. But reimagining for today, the augmented reality based Twister Air game is totally up my alley.
Twister Air ($19 at Amazon) he takes the mat and places it in the open space in front of you. Arm and ankle extension bands communicate with an AR app to track movements such as hand waves and jumps. You play by following the app’s movement cues, and I can best describe challenges as Just Dance meets the VR game Beat Saber.
I had a chance to play Twister Air for myself, and I was definitely surprised. While the game’s controls and difficulty level options are sure to make it suitable for young kids, I found it to be fun for adults, too.
One of my friends and I launched a game against Twister Air, both of us tied to our bands. We scrolled through a menu of song options, which again felt a lot like Just Dance. As soon as we chose a soundtrack and calibrated our limbs with the app, it was all moving and grooving from there.

Various instructions appeared on the screen, and our goal was to complete them with our movements. Some points are earned by hitting a spot on the screen with the co-ordinating color band, while others require you to fold your arms or have a three-point pose. Randomly, the game asked us to switch sides, and we had to do so quickly without getting hit. There was even one round after we battled for spots in each other’s fields, and that’s when things got competitive.
At the end, our points were raised. I won’t tell you who won (kidnapped, I did!) but it was a fair game. The only mistake I made was launching a gaming workout in my Apple Watch workout app, because let me tell you, Twister Air is a great way to close those Apple Watch rings.
The app then created a highlight reel from the game, so we could see the best moments of our moves. It’s safe to say we had a good laugh watching the chaos back. Although for next time, I think we’ll both step up to the harder difficulty mode.
Twister Air is a fast-paced fresh take on a familiar game. It’s an approachable introduction to AR for kids who haven’t seen it before. Plus, it’s never a bad thing to promote fun while getting some light exercise.
The game is available for pre-order on Amazon now, with the product officially launching on June 2nd. The Twister Air app will launch as a free download on June 1st, meaning it will be ready by the time people get their hands (and wrists and ankles) on the game. Full availability will arrive at other major retailers on August 1st.
