Energy bills: The 4 kitchen appliances pushing up bills and how to fix it | Personal Finance | Finance
To help keep costs down, experts have shared the most expensive appliances to run in the kitchen and energy-saving tips.
To save as much as possible, it’s important to know which appliances can have a big impact on your bills and what else people can do to reduce them.
According to Boxt, these appliances are the biggest contributors to a person’s energy bills.
1 Fridge Freezer
The estimated running costs are around £138 for a power usage of 408 kWh.
If someone is looking to save money in the long term, it would be worth investing in a more energy efficient appliance that will help reduce their bills.
Experts also advised that Brits should not overload their fridges as this means the fridge works harder to keep it cool.
2 Electric Tumble Dryers
The tumble dryer is used 148 times per year on average with a power consumption of 2.50 kWh.
This means that each use costs 85p, which equates to a total of £125.80 over the year.
To reduce costs, it is recommended that Brits should choose a quick spin cycle and clean the lint filter after each use.
3 Electric Ovens
It costs £71.66 a year to use, and the average usage is 135.1.
On energy-efficient cooking, Ben Gallizzi, senior content editor at Uswitch, said: “The microwave is usually the most efficient way to heat and cook food – it’s always faster and its size means smaller ( rather than the oven) that the heat is more focused on whatever is being cooked.”
4 Kettle
On average a kettle is used 1542 times per year and a power use of 0.11 kW.
People spend £57.67 every year, but there are ways to cut costs. If the kettle is boiling large masses of water, it will need more power to reach the boiling point. A simple way to reduce kettle costs is to boil enough water as needed.
People can measure this by first pouring water into their mug, then knocking it into the kettle. Turn off the kettle at the wall every time after using it, too, experts say.
Boxt also recommends switching to LED light bulbs if people can while using 70-80 percent less energy than traditional bulbs.
People should turn off plugs at the wall when a device is not in use, close the curtains as soon as the sun goes down.
