Human remains have been found near the spot where Hollywood actor Julain Sands went missing almost five months ago.

Sands, known for starring in The Killing Fields, A Room With A View, and Warlock as well as appearances in 24 and Smallville, was last seen on January 13. Mount Baldy area in southern California.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said civil engineers contacted authorities Saturday morning after finding the remains in the Mount Baldy area. The remains were transferred to the Coroner’s Office, pending positive identification, the department said.

The recognition is expected to be completed next week, at which time the Department will issue a press release. The discovery of the remains comes shortly after his family released a statement saying they continued to hold him “in our hearts with fond memories”.

“We are extremely grateful to the search teams and coordinators who worked tirelessly to find Julian,” the family said in a statement released by the sheriff’s department on Wednesday.

“Julian is always in our hearts with fond memories of him as a father, husband, explorer, lover of nature and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer.”

The sheriff’s department said that while Sands was not found during the June 17 search, the case remains active. Searches were hampered by poor conditions in the area and were halted in March due to the risk of avalanches.

There have been eight ground and air searches for Sands since he went missing, and over 500 volunteer search hours. A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s department previously said her goal was to bring “closure” to the Sands family.
