Former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith has warned that Joe Biden is the biggest obstacle to resolving the outstanding Brexit issues.
The claims came as the Center for Brexit Policy (CBP) revealed the crisis in Northern Ireland, which was brought in by Sir Iain.
The former Tory and prominent Brexiteer with strong ties to the US has blasted Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for the Windsor Framework which he described as “worse than the Protocol” negotiated by Boris Johnson on a temporary basis.
He added: “It was done just to impeach Biden.”
He accused the US President of being anti-British and anti-EU.
Sir Iain reminded the packed audience at the launch of the report that Mr Biden had insulted the UK even saying he had to visit Northern Ireland “to make sure the British don’t break it”.
He added to the problem by turning a planned full bilateral meeting with Mr. Sunak into an awkward meeting in a coffee shop.
US sources have claimed the Daily Express USA that the President received a special briefing after his visit to Northern Ireland to say that he had insulted America’s main ally.
The source said: “Neither the President nor the people seemed to understand why.”
Afterwards, Mr. Sunak was invited to the White House for appropriate talks to resolve the relationship.
But Sir Iain said his understanding is that a Republican President in the White House will be much more helpful to the UK.
The CBP report proposed a system of “mutual enforcement” that the EU uses with other partners around the world including New Zealand.
This means that no border checks are necessary and both sides ensure that the items to be exported to the other jurisdiction comply with its regulations.
DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson endorsed the proposal but Sir Iain warned that the UK Government has “no desire” to move on from the Windsor Framework.
