A continuous Nepal ended their SAAFF Championship campaign on a bright note, beating Pakistan 1-0 in a Group A match here on Tuesday.

Nepal’s Aashish Chaudhary (80th minute) broke the deadlock and ensured that Pakistan went home without a win. Nepal and Pakistan already out of contention for a semi-final spot after losing their earlier games.

The first half was rather dull with both teams struggling to find their range and rhythm a bit, although Nepal had the better of possession.

The pace picked up in the second half as Nepal and Pakistan went for the jugular. The first clear chance came Nepal’s way when a cross from the right found Nawayug Shrestha unmarked but his header sailed over the bar.

Nepal stepped it up and came close to scoring in the 60th minute. Manish Dangi only had to slip the ball past Yousuf Ijaz Butt but the Pakistan goalkeeper parried a weak shot away.

Eight minutes later, Shrestha took a beautiful free kick that went into the Pakistan goal but the woodwork denied the Nepalese midfielder.

Just as the game seemed headed for a goalless draw, Sanish Shrestha found Aashish inside the box to pass. Aashish cleverly pushed the ball under a diving Yousuf to give Nepal a 1-0 lead.

Nepal had a few more chances to double the lead after Pakistan opted for an attacking game to find the equaliser. Both teams, however, were unsuccessful in their respective ventures.
