BBC Celebrity Masterchef 2023 winner Wynne Evans has revealed that he tried to take his own life.

The 51-year-old singer and soap opera presenter beat Emmerdale actress Amy Walsh and Love Island contestant Lucas Bish in the final round of the BBC One cookery competition on Friday.

In an interview broadcast after his win, he said: “It was funny when they gave me the trophy, because I didn’t really expect to win. I thought Amy [Walsh] he was smashed.

“When they gave me the trophy, I will get melancholy for a moment, right, I remember thinking six years ago, I was thinking, well, I tried to take my own life and look at me now.”

Before I go on to add: “I’m standing here in a studio with the MasterChef trophy. It was a really moving moment for me.”

Wynne was a hit with the Masterchef audience during the competition and impressed judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace by creating Welsh dishes made with Welsh recipes.

In the final he cooked a three course meal inspired by Wales which included a starter of Carmarthen-Japanese sumo tuna tartare with avocado, edamame beans and wasabi, with deep fried popcorn and a mango egg.

This was followed by his main course, bread of Evans lamb, served on samphire with wild garlic, porcini mushrooms and rendered fried bread lamb, with pomme dauphine and leek fondant, finished with red wine and red currant jus.

In addition, there was a traditional Bara Brith dessert, which he served with Caerphilly cheese and fig jam and an extra serving of brie ice cream on chopped Bara Brith and poached figs.

Speaking about his winning menu, he said: “I think these dishes represent everything I am – local produce, things I can easily get at home, and everything I like to eat.”

Fans were quick to take to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their love for the BBC Radio Wales DJ. One fan wrote: “Omg Wynne is the winner! Da iawn @wynneevans you deserve it” followed by clapping hand emojis.

Another fan posted: “Great win Wynne! It was all great and a great ending!”

A third wrote: “Well done Wynne! @MasterChefUK I think you should take a leaf out of Masterchef Australia’s book though, the final is the event and and but and of and but and and and Not just poor Wynne alone with John & Greg. I felt a little sad!”

This is not the first time the star has spoken out about her struggles with mental health. In an interview with British journalist Dot Davies earlier this year, Wynne spoke about the breakdown of her marriage in 2016, revealing that she was at rock bottom.

He told BBC Radio Wales: “I was going through the worst depression, clinical depression. I would think about (suicide), I would try to do it… I couldn’t see a way out; I couldn’t see a way to be happy again.”

He added: “I was feeling suicidal, and it was terrible. I thought I’m going to do something terrible or I have to go see a proper psychiatrist.”

He has now turned his life around and classifies his depression and anxiety as a “superpower” and advises others to “put in the work” to improve their mental health.
