Nayak scored 12.966 points in the vault final to be tied for third, behind Greta Mayer of Hungary (13.149) and Alice Vlkova of the Czech Republic (12.999). She then edged out Athanasia Mesiri from Greece, who also scored 12.966, in the individual vault round, scoring 13.066 to Mesiri’s 13.000.

Nayak performed a reverse Tsukahara 720 – half off the springboard and push of the vault board with the number indicating the amount of total rotation – and a forward 360 mattress arm spin. 13.066 points were obtained on the first boat and 12.866 points on the second one. The aggregate is the average of the two scores.

Nayak was the only Indian woman in action on Saturday. Dipa Karmakar failed to qualify for the women’s eight final, making it a tight affair. Only 0.233 points separated second-placed Vlkova from eighth-placed Georgian Dorien Motten (12.766). The difference between winner Mayer and Motten was 0.383 points.

“It was a good tournament and it will boost their confidence ahead of the Asian Games,” said Hungary’s national coach Ashok Mishra. “We have about ten days to fine-tune our preparations for the Asian Games; We will go for more difficult vaults in Hangzhou.”

Nayak has regained form and fitness after tearing a ligament in her right shoulder. She plans to sharpen the 540 handspring routine — a 1-½-stand rotation — at the Asian Games.
