Back in 2018, Bohemian Rhapsody faced lukewarm reviews from the critics which went on to become a worldwide box office smash.

The Queen biopic even won Best Picture at the Golden Globes and won more Oscars than any other film at the 2019 Academy Awards.

This included a Best Actor win for Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury himself.

The film made a whopping $910.8 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing biopic of all time.

However, this record has just been beaten by another large-scale epic.

According to DeadlineOppenheimer’s box office total has hit $912 million this weekend.

This means that Christopher Nolan’s film has set a new record for the highest grossing biopic in history.

It’s particularly noteworthy since the film is a three-hour R-rated drama (15 in the UK).

It’s unclear if Oppenheimer will reach $1 billion, but Universal has already made $4 billion this year, with the help of the likes of The Super Mario Bros Movie as well.

Nolan’s new film is his biggest hit at the international box office and the second highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

Just ahead of the historical epic is Joaquin’s Phoenix Joker which took $1.074 million worldwide and is getting a sequel next year.
