Australia’s Love Island producer explains the ‘heart of consent’
On October 30, Australia’s Love IslandExecutive Producer Alex Mavroidakis discussed the “heart of consent”. TV tonight and explained how it works.
“We have created an Australian invention called the Heart of Consent. At the bedside everyone has a little button. When the bedroom is dark, if you press that button, your side of the heart will light up, except in infrared. It is not seen in the bedroom. Only if both buttons are pressed, and the whole heart is in infrared, are you allowed to kiss, touch, do everything with each other.”
Mavroidakis emphasizes the importance of this when dealing with reality dating shows. When the contestants get into bed together and the blankets are pulled over them, it’s impossible to know what’s going on underneath. The “heart of consent” assures viewers that all participants have agreed to the interaction.
Australia’s Love Island serious about consent
You might be thinking that the Heart of Consent is a great option for these daters, but it’s not optional. Australia’s Love Island producers require all participants of the show to use it as soon as they start kissing or touching in bed.
According to Mavroidakis, if the reality stars forget, producers will go into the bedrooms of the villa to ask them to push their “heart of consent” buttons. They will only be left alone after all participants have given their consent. Producers remind the singles to use the buttons daily, so it’s their own fault if their make-out sessions are interrupted.
