New Zealand’s Steven Alker has claimed a share of the lead at the halfway point of the season-ending PGA Tour Champions event in Florida.
Alker and American Marco Dawson are joint leaders at 11 under after shooting match rounds and New Zealand’s Steven Alker shot a match round seven under 64 on Saturday at the Charles Schwab Cup Seniors event at Phoenix Country Club .
They sit one stroke clear of four golfers on 10 under: Ireland’s Pádraig Harrington (63 on Friday), Germany’s Alex Cejka (64), Harrison Frazar (67) and Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee (67).
Steve Stricker, who previously won the Schwab Trophy title for the season, withdrew from the season finale earlier this week when his father was hospitalized for a medical emergency.
The tournament pitch is second.
Alker, last year’s Schwab Cup winner, could move into second place with a win after entering the week in fourth place.
The 52-year-old birdied five of the seven holes he had in the second round. After five straight pars, he picked up three birdies and a bogey in the final six-hole stretch.
“You got the start I wanted again today. It was great,” said Alker.
“… I didn’t play the backhand well yesterday and (on Friday) I kept my round going. I bogeyed there somewhere. Yeah, I’m glad to keep it going and finish strong.”
Alker’s score was his lowest score of the season through 36 holes as he seeks the second win of his 2023 campaign and the seventh of his career at the senior level.
Alker finished third in the competition last year and was second in 2021.
