Cricket World Cup: New Zealand qualify for semi-finals

0

New Zealand’s place in the semi-finals of the Cricket World Cup was assured on Saturday when Pakistan failed to achieve a remarkable result in their final group game against England.

Pakistan, the 1992 champions, had to beat England by 287 runs to secure their place in the semi-finals at the expense of the Kiwis on the current net rate.

However, England struck first, closing that avenue, and Pakistan’s fate was sealed when they faced the impossible task of scoring over 300 runs by the 40th ball of their reply to the champions’ 337-9.

New Zealand will host India in the first semi-final in Mumbai on Wednesday, while Australia and South Africa clash in Kolkata 24 hours later.
