Jonnie Irwin was “on the brink of death” as he lay in a hospice bed in agony.
The A Place In The Sun star’s shocking moment came almost six months ago, almost three years after he was first diagnosed with terminal cancer.
The 49-year-old was struggling to walk and his weight dropped to six stone when he moved to St Oswald’s in Newcastle.
When the presenter was there his wife Jess, 40, was told that her husband was unlikely to make their twins’ birthday two weeks later.
Jonnie has now opened up about his “weakest point” in a new joint interview, saying he thought it was “the beginning of the end”.
The Escape To The Country host recalled back to The sun: “Laying in the hospice, I thought I would have it. I was on the cusp of death.
“I’ve never thought about death, despite the cancer, and Jess and I don’t talk about it.
“But at the weakest point I thought, ‘This is it, this is the beginning of the end’.”
Jonnie was initially given just six months to live after being diagnosed with lung cancer that had spread to his brain in August 2020.
His wife brought him home from the hospice to spend the last days with their son Rex, four, and their youngest boys: Rafa and Cormac, three.
Jess continued: “The doctors said, ‘We’re sending him home and we’ll advise you to spend as much time as you can together’.
“They weren’t so blunt as to give us a date, but when I told them we’d planned a big party for the twins and asked if we should cancel it, the doctors said they didn’t think Jonnie would there. to it.
“It was devastating.”
But he soon outwitted the doctors and regained his strength, and plans to celebrate his 50th birthday in Spain next week.
Jonnie’s health has certainly not wavered since those scary days, and he suffered a setback in September.
Tests found a 1.5cm cancerous growth on his brain and he underwent radiotherapy.
He is now awaiting the results of the scans to see if the treatment has worked.
The TV favorite said: “I never thought I’d be here.”
