Exclusive! Sushmita Sen was told quitting films for motherhood was a big blunder
Sushmita Sen is a name synonymous with beauty, grace, and a wonderful personality. After winning Miss Universe in 1994, Sushmita Sen made her acting debut, playing a fictional version of herself in the thriller “Dastak”. Although the film was not fully appreciated for its exciting elements, one thing was clear: Sushmita Sen had the `IT’ factor.
Since winning the Miss Universe More ventures like Main Hoon Na or Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya dominated the 2000s, and Sushmita Sen made her mark in Bollywood, without entering the rat race to the top.
The actor sat down for a heart-to-heart chat with Midday’s ‘Sit With Hitlist’ segment to find out about his 8-year hiatus from Bollywood. The actress and mother of two, Alisah and Renee, opened up about a big question her youngest daughter asked her that inspired her to return to the industry.
Reflecting on his last Bollywood ventures before `Aarya,` Sushmita remembered, “There was no Problem the last one. I said, we are going to face the problem, and the problem is that it is not working, and I was just to be a mother again.” Alisah, who was only a month old when Sushmita adopted her, played a significant role in her decision-making process during that period.
Sushmita explained, “I love motherhood. So let me do this, right? Of course, I had my manager there and people from the industry, friends who said, “You’re making a huge mistake. This is d ‘prime age as an actor; you don’t quit at this point.’ But inside, there’s a voice saying `No, don’t do it.’
Sushmita Sen explained that her hiatus from acting was always meant to be a temporary break. “I said I wasn’t quitting. I’m just taking a break.”
She continued to paint a picture of her life after her extended `break’. “So, I took a break, and that break continued because the scripts that were coming dried up as well, obviously because you’re not seen.
However, an unexpected question from Alisah led to a central realization for Sushmita Sen. Narrating the conversation, Sushmita shared, “One day, she meets some paps under the house, and she says, `Maa, why are they taking pictures with you?’ So I said, “Because I’m kind of famous.` So she goes, “Doing what?” I said, “I was Miss Universe. That was a long time ago, mom.” But I’m also a good actress. But you don’t act. No. you make movies.`”
Sushmita continued, “I said, ‘Because I’m sitting here with you, I wanted to be with you.` No, you don’t, mother. I don’t want you.”
Alisah’s simple statement had a powerful impact. It shook Sushmita to the core. The statement became a catalyst, a driving force that prompted her to reach out to streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hotstar, signaling that she was ready to step back into her true calling.
