Sinner was chasing his first ATP Finals final and came into the match having won his last two matches against Medvedev, despite going head to head 2-6. The Italians are unbeaten so far in Turin, going 3-0 in the group stage this week, while Medvedev has lost one game against Alcaraz.
He looked to continue that streak as he came out swinging against the world No. 3. Sinner was under pressure when he was forced to save an early break point but he quickly slammed the door and started to turn the heat on Medvedev’s serve instead. With the 2020 ATP Finals champion leading 40-0 in the quarterfinals of the match, Sinner reeled off five straight points to secure the break and take a 3-1 lead.
It was crucial, as the world No. 4 through the secrets until he got the opener 6-3. Again Medvedev had his first chance to break in the second set with Sinner serving at 3-4. It was a tough match for the 22-year-old, who lasted nearly ten minutes when his first serve suddenly abandoned him.
But he managed to do it while the home crowd chanted his name, and the pressure was suddenly back on the Russians. Sin began to paint the lines and was 0-30 ahead in Medvedev’s next service game but the 27-year-old raised his level and became the better player at the end of the second set.
The Italians were forced to break ties as the fans chanted “ole, Sinner” again as they tried to overcome their man. Medvedev managed to save the first break as the 22-year-old failed to chase down a shot but immediately got away, sending the ball long. Sin gave him the advantage again as he dumped the ball into the back of the net. Medvedev needed to take the set 7-6(4) to force a decider, although the Russian was worried when he left the court with the video.
The pendulum swung back towards Sinner as he started well in the third set and the final. Medvedev was immediately in trouble when he went down 15-40 in his opening service game. He saved both break points but Sinner set up a third and a double fault from the world No 3 gave him the match. Medvedev’s composure began to slip as he tossed his racket into the sideboard in the next game, pointing at the crowd and rousing it.
As Medvedev’s focus waned, Sinner began to add to it again. The former No. could not. The fourth seed needed three break points but managed to grab a doubles lead, the final nail in the coffin for Medvedev’s tenure in Turin.
For the third game in a row, Sinner managed to survive in three sets as he closed out the match after two hours and 29 minutes as the fans went wild. The 22-year-old is through to his biggest final yet and has not lost a game since October 10.
He will face either Alcaraz or Djokovic as he bids to end the season on a high. The Italian picked up his first ever win over Djokovic in the group earlier this week and takes his head-to-head with Alcaraz four wins to three losses.
