Wheeler Dealers hosts unveils big mistake made by classic car owners – ‘the worst thing’

Mike Brewer and Marc Priestley revealed one of the mistakes that classic car owners often make.

The duo asked owners who refused to drive their historic vehicles after splashing out on a vintage model.

Many owners choose to store them in garages to keep them safe but the TV hosts have suggested that is not a good idea.

Mr Priestley, nicknamed Elvis, said it was the “worst thing in the world” and warned that buying vehicles as collectibles was part of the problem.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Priestley said: “Don’t just look for trends. Don’t think of buying a classic car just to make money.

“Buy something you love, buy something you’re interested in because when you love the car you’re more likely to be willing to spend time on it, take care of it, drive it.

“He loves driving these classic cars. The worst thing in the world is to buy something classic and clean it up where no one sees it and it never turns wheels.

“Buy the car you’re interested in before you think about what will make you the most money, what’s the most popular.

“In doing so, by buying something you’re emotionally invested in you’re more likely to keep that car alive, preserve it, look after it and see it out on the road as it should be.”

The Driving of the Future survey found that a whopping 30 per cent of classic car owners considered them primarily as an investment.

However, a separate poll from classic car specialists James Path this was found not to be the case.

A report published last year found that only three percent of respondents said that owning a classic car was an investment.

Meanwhile, a whopping 64 percent said they considered it a hobby and 20 percent claimed nostalgia was another motivator.

Wheeler Dealers host Mike Brewer has urged owners to get behind the wheel of their classics.

He told Express.co.uk: “The saddest thing in the world is the person who dies with the lowest mileage Porsche.

“They are there to drive. I know personally because I have a collection.”

Wheeler Dealers is shown on Quest every Monday at 9pm with episodes streaming on Discovery +.
