Jonnie Irwin has celebrated his 50th birthday, just a year after he revealed he had terminal lung cancer and was given six months to live two years earlier.

The TV presenter has a sunny birthday in Spain’s Costa Del Sol with his wife Jessica Holmes and their sons, four-year-old Rex and twins Rafa and Cormac.

Speaking to HELLO!, Jonnie said: “It’s such a privilege to be able to celebrate my birthday with blue skies and sand between my toes.

“I had an early birthday party at the start of the year because I didn’t think I would.

“It was like being at my own wake; lots of fun, lots of dancing. But here I am. I look at it as a total win.”

Since battling the life-threatening illness, Jonnie has treasured every day and is enjoying spending time with his family in Spain.

“Every little thing is so precious to me, even kicking the ball against the wall for half an hour,” he told the publication.

“It’s so special and it’s great to be away from home with my wife and kids for my 50th.”

The father-of-three was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2020, and has since had to endure chemotherapy as the disease spread to his liver and brain.

The writer took a turn for the worst this summer when he found himself in a hospice suffering from intestinal complications as a result of taking strong painkillers.

His partner Jessica was told he might not be able to see their twins’ birthdays until two weeks later.

Jonnie was sent home to die peacefully, but after slowly taking food, he started to feel stronger by the day and ended up having a great summer with his loved ones.

The A Place In The Sun host told his 230,000 Instagram followers he was heading to Spain for a family holiday as he shared a video from the airport.

He told his beloved fans that he had previously cleared the trip with his oncologist and if needed, there are also hospitals in Spain.
