Piers Morgan addresses Diana’s ‘very unpleasant streak’ after phone call | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV
Piers Morgan has claimed Princess Diana had an “unpleasant streak” in a rare insight.
The Uncensored presenter, 58, suggested the royal was a “master manipulator” when he came to “take advantage” of her love life in the media following her divorce from Prince Charles.
While Piers was working as a newspaper editor he recalled moments where she sometimes “stitched it up”.
After their first meeting at a charity event, the broadcaster was invited to dine with Diana for a private lunch at Kensington Palace where they were joined by 13-year-old Prince William and his former butler Paul Burrell.
For two hours she is said to have regaled Piers with clips of her new life outside the Royal Family.
Writing in his latest column for The sunhe wrote: “She talked about her lovers – prompting William to say that he kept a photograph of Will Carling’s wife Julia on a dart board and had ‘never laughed so hysterically’ as when, after James Hewitt spilled the beans about his affair in his. tawdry book, I hired a white horse, which the Mirror reporter rode, in full armour, to Hewitt’s house to charge him with treason for sleeping with the wife of a future king.”
During their candid chat Piers noted that Diana seemed optimistic about her future but felt pressured to be in the public eye, adding that she didn’t mind a life of anonymity but had nowhere to run to to him.
After their lunch, Piers said the pair had agreed he would let her know if a sensitive story about her was published but claimed she “didn’t play fair”.
He recalled one instance, three months before she died, while working at The Mirror he received a call that Diana had visited the Priory Clinic in London and given a speech to women with eating disorders.
Piers informed Diana that they were aware and “she gave me an hour-long off-record interview over the phone about exactly what she said, and her own experiences with bulimia and anorexia”.
But as soon as the story broke the next day, Diana issued a furious statement condemning the “perceived” publication of “private conversations” from her visit to the Priory.
Piers called the office of the late Princess of Wales about the situation.
Among other things, the former Good Morning Britain presenter admitted he admired Diana but claimed she often used the media to serve her own agenda – something he believes has not been shown. accurate in the latest series of The Crown.
“So, although I loved her for many reasons – she was very beautiful and very energetic, as the actress Elizabeth Debicki captures so well in her wonderful performance – there was a very unpleasant streak and Diana also doubles that never appears in The Crown,” he suggested.
Early on Sunday morning, August 31, 1997, Princess Diana died in a car crash in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris alongside Dodi Fayed – and the tragedy is being revisited in the final series of The Crown .
