Card payment date fix ends debt and charge fears | The Crusader | Finance
She always kept an eagle eye on her credit card repayments, but one single woman didn’t realize that the date she made them was just as important – and that it cost her little.
As cash reserves dwindle amid the relentless struggle to cope with cost-of-living pressures, payback times are urgently needed.
Sandra Jones was in serious danger of losing her mind when she saw two of her Barclaycard payments disappear from her bank account in the space of one month.
The trouble with this fell because the pensioner, like many these days, lives close to the edge with little spare cash or room for maneuver as she struggles to keep her head above water.
“When I looked at my statement, the last two payments were made in August. The latter had been forwarded. It’s critical now that I don’t have the money to make the September payment,” she told Crusader.
“That would mean they could charge extra because I would then lose payment, although that was not my choice. I think there is already a £14 late payment fee.”
Sandra contacted the card provider asking if he could refund her so she could then make the September one in time.
“I called twice and was told both times there was no problem and within seven days,” she says.
“It hasn’t been done so far and I’m so worried because it could affect my credit rating if I don’t pay again.”
Crusader asked Barclaycard to look into what happened and why – especially as this could be an issue for other customers who need to be aware of – regardless of their credit card.
Barclaycard, known as Sandra, cracked down and settled for her.
A spokesperson said: “We are sorry for the level of service our customer received when trying to arrange a credit card refund, after accidentally making two refunds during the same billing cycle. We have spoken to the customer to let them know how to avoid this happening again, and have provided £300 to apologize for the stress and inconvenience caused.”
Sandra is very relieved and the £300 will help a lot. Her credit rating has not been affected and given her stretched finances the two are also in contact about any additional help that may be available.

To avoid payment overlaps, check your billing cycle and ensure there is a safe distance between the date you set the payment to be received and when your statement is generated. If they are close together, fix that to avoid the worry of not being able to pay. Also worth noting: refunds for past payments are not processed if there is a possibility that the reversal and any resulting interest would strain the customer’s credit limit.
