A court in Gandhinagar in Gujarat on Tuesday granted bail to an Australian arrested for interfering on the field during the ICC World Cup cricket final while wearing a pro-Palestine t-shirt. A day earlier, the court remanded the accused, Wen Johnson, in police custody for a day. Johnson was brought before the court on Tuesday afternoon where he was released on bail on conditions that he cooperates in the investigation and deposits his passport with the court, a senior city crime branch official said.
Security had left Johnson and reached the field at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad when Virat Kohli was in the spotlight during the final match against Australia on Sunday evening. He was immediately arrested by security personnel.
Johnson was arrested by the police on charges of criminal trespass and causing injury to discourage public servants from performing their duties.
The investigation was handed over to the city crime branch on Monday which took Johnson’s custody from the police and produced him before the court in Gandhinagar seeking his extradition for further investigation.
According to the FIR, Johnson entered the stadium as a common spectator. He jumped the railing and then ran towards the field after pushing police aside in a desperate attempt to hug Kohli.
Johnson told the police that he entered the ground because he is a big fan of Virat Kohli, the FIR said.
He wore a face mask with a design of the Palestinian flag and a T-shirt with slogans – ‘Stop bombing Palestine’ and ‘Save Palestine’ – written on the front and back respectively.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Johnson is a habitual offender and has been booked in his country for invading sports fields in the past.
